21-Day Spring Detox Overview
What is Detoxification?
Detoxification is a process that is naturally occurring in our bodies to help us transform toxic or harmful substances in the body to less harmful ones and/or to completely eliminate them all together. The liver is one of the main organs associated with detoxification. Everything that enters our bodies is metabolized in the liver so that it can be broken down into signals that the body recognizes. Our liver is also responsible for the metabolism of substances that are already in our body, such as hormones. The liver has two main phases of detoxification. The Phase 1 pathway reduces macronutrients (fat, carbohydrates, proteins) and toxins to intermediate substances. These intermediate substances then enter Phase II and are further reduced to water-soluble products that are now able to leave the body through feces, urine, sweat and/or through breath. When these pathways become overwhelmed, the methods of elimination are no longer functioning optimally and toxins begin to accumulate in our bodies, impacting both our physical and mental health.
Where are toxins coming from?
From the air we breathe to the food we eat, the water we drink, the makeup we wear, and the furniture we sit on, there are environmental toxicants everywhere. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) conducted a study that found women and men in the United States use on average 12 and 6 self-care products, respectively, on their body and/or face every day. This includes products like shampoo, soap, deodorant, make-up, hair spray, perfume/cologne etc. This alone exposed women to 168 different ingredients and men to 85. Although not all of the ingredients are toxic, many of the ingredients are carcinogenic, neurotoxic, and/or are endocrine disruptors, and can negatively impact our health.
